The polished stainless steel quad tips ( dual tips on each side) are 4 inch diameter. The diameter on the mandrel bent tubes is 2-1/2 inches that connect the system to your exhaust system. If you used the same configuration with the stock exhaust parts on the vehicle then that would restrict it some. You may only need to lower the exhaust system on your 2011 Subaru Forester to install this Curt Hitch, part # 13147. The mechanic maybe did not realize that you only had to lower it temporarily, and he thought you had to remove the whole system.
Or maybe he did not realize that if you unhook the four rear exhaust hangers the exhaust will drop enough to allow you to install the hitch. The exhaust will have to be supported at this point to prevent any damage from being done to the exhaust.

He informed me that all the exhausts that they develop are designed to be under 95 decibels from outside the vehicle and to reduce drone inside the vehicle. Also, with the amount of sound deadening material on an SUV, that should help reduce some of the noise. But, with any custom exhaust application, there will be a difference in noise.
